Why Cardio Hits Different With T1D.

If you have Type 1 Diabetes and you do cardio a lot, you’ve probably learned this the hard way: cardio can make your blood sugar feel unpredictable.

Some days you drop fast. Some days you spike first. Some days you do everything “right” and your numbers still do their own thing.

This post breaks down what cardio does to your body and why you tend to go low during or after cardio — plus what helps you stay safer and more steady.

What cardio does to your body (and why it affects blood sugar)

Cardio is usually considered “aerobic” exercise — things like running, cycling, incline walking, stair-master, dance cardio, etc. During aerobic exercise, your muscles need a steady supply of energy.

That energy often comes from glucose (sugar in your blood) and stored glycogen (glucose stored in your muscles and liver).

Here’s the key: when you’re doing cardio, your body becomes more efficient at pulling glucose out of your bloodstream to use as fuel. That’s great for performance — but with T1D, it can mean your blood sugar drops faster than you expect.

Why you can go low during cardio

Going low during cardio is common because:

  • Your muscles are using glucose constantly while you’re moving.

  • Insulin on board (from a recent bolus or basal) can make that glucose drop happen even faster.

  • Cardio is steady + continuous, so the glucose demand doesn’t really let up.

If you’ve ever felt fine at the start and then suddenly you’re shaky, sweaty, or confused mid-workout — that’s why.

Why you can go low after cardio (the “after-burn” effect)

Even when you finish your workout, your body doesn’t instantly go back to normal.

After cardio, your muscles keep working to:

  • replenish glycogen stores (basically “refill the tank”), and

  • recover from the workout.

That can make you more insulin sensitive for hours afterward — meaning the same amount of insulin can hit harder than usual. This is why some people crash low 1–3 hours later (or even later depending on intensity of workout/cardio).

Why some people spike first (adrenaline highs)

Not everyone drops right away. Sometimes cardio (especially intense intervals, sprints, competition, or anything that feels stressful) can trigger adrenaline.

Adrenaline can signal your liver to release glucose — which can cause a temporary spike. Then later, when the adrenaline wears off and your muscles keep pulling glucose in, you can still drop.

What helps (general tips that many T1Ds use)

Everyone’s body is different, but these are common things that help people avoid the cardio rollercoaster:

  • Know your trend before you start (steady, rising, or dropping).

  • Have fast carbs on you (always).

  • Plan for the after — not just the workout.

  • Be careful with aggressive corrections if you spike from adrenaline.

  • Refuel after with carbs + protein if you tend to crash.

  • Have a quick snack that has extended carbs (carbs that last longer and break down more slowly than fast acting sugars) before the workout if you're someone who crashes during the workout like: whole grains (brown rice, oats), legumes (beans), starchy and fibrous veggies (sweet potatoes &broccoli).
